The Story Behind That Photo

You can’t see my face but this is my favorite photo of me performing and everything you are about to read is 100% true. I was the best man. My friend and his bride were on their way to their own reception when a police cruiser hit their car. He called me from the scene, both of them hurt, apologizing that the party might not go the way anyone had planned. They were both taken to the hospital and neither of them made it to their own reception that night. They recovered, and eventually had a proper reception, but that day, it was just the two of them missing from their own party.

The food was already paid for. The guests were already seated. So my friend asked me to do the one thing he knew I could do: hold the room together in their place.

I had a few of my tools with me, like always. So I went table to table, then took the floor, and turned a room full of shocked, worried people into a room that was laughing, guessing, and leaning in, even without the guests of honor there to see it.
